The food industry is a heavily regulated sector, meaning that standards are crucial to the food plus food-grade bulk bags they are stored in.
Mistakes can prove extremely costly, with contaminations, regulatory violations and improper food handling unacceptable and dangerous.
The Global Food Safety Initiative is one of the most influential organisations in the food industry. This private organisation aims to bring together key figures in the food sector to drive continuous improvement in food safety management systems.
One of their most important functions is recognising particular food certification schemes and standards, which form the fundamentals of food safety.
For our latest blog, we will explore GFSI standards in greater detail and see which ones have a significant impact on FIBC bulk bags.
5 GFSI Standards Explained
1. BRCGS - Used by over 29,000 certified suppliers, BRCGS food standards are also used in over 130 countries.
2. International Food Standard (IFS) - Founded in 2003, the IFS offers uniform food, product and service standards. Their focus is on auditing food manufacturers, their certifications and standards are mostly applied when products are processed or a potential hazard for contamination exists during food processing. Ensuring comparability and transparency for consumers during the whole supply chain, IFS aims to also reduce costs for suppliers and retailers.
3. Safety Quality Food (SQF) - The SQF program is rigorous and credible food safety and quality initiative recognised by retailers, brand owners and food service providers all over the world. The SQF program is the only GFSI-recognised scheme which includes a safety and quality program under one umbrella.
4. Foundation Food Safety Certification 22000 (FSSC 22000) - This scheme offers complete certification for the auditing of Food Safety Management Systems. It uses international standards such as ISO 22000, ISO 9001 and ISO/TS 22002-1. FSSC 22000 uses 20 food safety professions working towards continual improvement and innovation to complete FSSC 22000's mission.
5. Primus GFS - Owned and managed by Azzule Systems, this certification standard has been recognised by GFSI since June 2018. Offered to 20 countries across the globe, the various audits include Food Safety Management System, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP's), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's) plus Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP).
