The reasons why polypropylene is a superior fabric

Posted on - 2nd June 2021

Polypropylene fabric is any textile product that is derived from thermoplastic polymer and is the most commonly produced plastic in the world.

From industrial packaging (such as FIBCs) to temporary tents, polypropylene is used to make a number of products.

The history of polypropylene fabric

Polypropylene was originally developed in 1951 by Phillips Petroleum as the result of a failed experiment. Two chemists were attempting to extract gasoline from propylene, but their efforts failed to do so.

They realised quickly that the new element had accidentally created in the process was highly versatile and could benefit numerous industries.

Once polypropylene (PP) became popular among manufacturers, its excellent waterproof properties were discovered. PP cannot absorb any moisture itself, instead, it goes through this fabric without leaving any trace behind.

Because of its low specific gravity, polypropylene fabric offers the greatest volume of fibre for a given weight which means the fibre gives good cover and bulk whilst being incredibly lightweight.

Polypropylene is 20% lighter than nylon and 34% lighter than polyester.

Why PP is used for industrial packaging

There are a number of factors that make PP fabric the best choice for packaging, including -

Resistance to bacteria and rodents - Polypropylene fibres are resistant to microorganisms, rats, moths, insects, pests and bacteria. The fabric is also rot proof, meaning it cannot develop mould or mildew.

Low Cost - Since PP fabric is a non-woven material it is more cost-effective than woven or spun materials.

Flexible - Polypropylene is very sturdy yet flexible as it can be moulded into different shapes and sizes, depending on the customer's requirements. For example, extra-large containers could be needed to transport flour with smaller ones needed to pack pet food. PP fabric can meet all of your storage, packaging and transport needs.

PP fabric is also eco-friendly as it can be recycled, which helps to reduce your carbon footprint.
