If you have never used woven polypropylene sacks from Centurion Packaging you may be unfamiliar with some of the terminology associated with them.

This is why we have put together this glossary of commonly used terms regarding woven polypropylene.

Terms Explained for Woven Polypropylene Sacks

Polypropylene (PP) - This is a type of polymer that is used in producing monofilament and multi-filament yarns and threads. It is recyclable and is used to manufacture woven polypropylene bags.

Yarn/Tape - Extruded polypropylene sheet, slit and stretched in annealing ovens to form part of the woven fabric of the bag.

Warp - Yarn or tape in a fabric, oriented perpendicular to the weft yarn during weaving, which would go from top to bottom in the body fabric.

Weft - Yarn or tape in a fabric, orientated perpendicular to the warp yarn during weaving, which goes from left to right in the body fabric.

Woven - The combination of many polypropylene yarns or tapes in two directions which form the fabric.

Denier - The weight of yarn in grams per 9000 metres.

Fabric Mesh - The measurement of the fabric weave's density, which is measured as the number of yarns per inch in both the Warp and Weft directions.

Fabric Weight - The measure of the fabric weight in ounces per square yard or grams per 100 sq. cm.

Stitches per Inch - This is a sewing specification requiring 'X' number of stitches per inch.

Seam - A sew line made by the attachment/assembly of two or more components.

Top Hemmed/Hemming - A fold and sew operation that prevents the fraying of cut fabric which also provides a clean finish to woven polypropylene sacks. This can be either towards the inside or outside of the bag.

Body Fabric - The tubular portion of seamless or circular woven bags.

Breathable Fabric/Bags - Uncoated or non-laminated fabric/bags

Circular Woven Bag - Sometimes referred to as a tubular bag, this is made from fabric woven on a circular loom, which is then cut to the proper length for a specified bag height. This eliminates the seams on each of the bag's sides.

Coated Fabric/Bags - Fabric lining coated or laminated with polypropylene which prevents moisture intrusion or the sifting of contents inside the sack.

Bag Size - This is the width and length, with the length dimension of bulk bags measured from the top seam to the bottom seam. Sizes can vary of tolerance of an increase or minus of 3%.

UV Stabilized - This feature of woven polypropylene bags provides protection from prolonged exposure to the sun's degrading ultraviolet rays. A pigment is added to the resin before the extrusion process of the yarns which provide UV stabilisation to bags.
